KELLERMAN, Bernard. The Tunnel. New York: The Macaulay Co. 1915. First Edition. H. L. S. dustjacket art. Bleiler listed science fiction novel first published in Germany and set in New York City. The action of the novel surrounds the construction of the Trans-Atlantic Train Tunnel. Basis for several early science-fiction themed films, including the 1915 German black and white silent directed by William Wauer, the well-known expressionist artist, who, in 1924, became the chairman of the International Association of Expressionists, Cubists, Futurists, and Konstructivists, as well as the head of the art group "Die Abstrakten." A 1933 talking version was directed by Curtis Bernhardt and starred Paul Hartmann and Attila Hörbiger. The English production was not released until 1935 and included anti-Nazi elements and the early use of futuristic set designs. The black and white talkie was directed by Maurice Elvey and starred Richard Dix, Madge Evans and Leslie Banks. Very Good Plus with lower third of spine cloth faded in Very Good Plus dustjacket with shallow chipping to spine ends and front bottom edge, closed tear and splitting along lower third of front spine edge mended with archival tape at verso of spine, light staining to rear top edge, general edge wear. A still attractive copy of this extremely scarce title.
